  • Ritual and ritual text in the Zoroastrian tradition

    Zeini, Arash. 2021. Ritual and ritual text in the Zoroastrian tradition: The extent of Yasna 41. Journal of the Royal Asiatic Society.

    This article examines the extent of the concluding section (Y 41) of the Yasna Haptaŋhāiti in light of the manuscript evidence and the section’s divergent reception in a Middle Persian text known as the “Supplementary Texts to the Šāyest nē Šāyest” (Suppl.ŠnŠ). This investigation will entertain the possibility of an alternative ritual being described in the Suppl.ŠnŠ. Moreover, it argues that the manuscripts transmit the ritual text along with certain variations and repetitions while the descriptions of the extent of each section preserve the necessary boundaries of the text as a textual composition or unit.

  • Genetics and Iranian Studies

    چندی پیش در مطلبی کوتاه درباره زبان‌شناسی تاریخی، با عنوان «آیا ایرانیان آریایی هستند؟»، به پژوهشهای ژنتیک اشاره کردم. در ادامه آن نوشته این دو کتاب را با توجه به این که هر دو به ایران هم میپردازند، اینجا معرفی می‌کنم.

    پژوهش‌ در مورد ژنتیک، نژاد و دی‌ان‌ای باستانی ممکن است در ابتدا برای مطالعات ایرانشناسی و فعالیت ما در سایت BiblioIranica موضوعی فرعی به نظر برسد. اما نتایج این نوع مطالعات میتوانند نقش مهمی در درک بهتر ما از پرسش‌های پیچیده‌ای مانند مهاجرت، رابطه خانواده‌های زبانی و ملی گرایی ایرانی بازی کنند. دو کتاب زیر، این موضوعات را از دیدگاه‌های متفاوت مورد بحث قرار می‌دهند و هر دو در گوشه و کنار به ایران هم می‌پردازند.

  • آیا ایرانیان آریایی هستند؟ بخش یک

    شخصی در توییتر پیشنهاد کرده بود که چیزی در مورد رابطه بین زبانهای هند و اروپایی و تئوری‌های نژادی و نژادپرستانه بنویسم. من هم گفتم، به روی چشم و بعد پشیمون شدم. چرا؟ چون موضوع از حد یک نوشته کوچک بزرگتر است و در موردش زیاد کتاب و مقاله نوشته شده. با این حال فکر کردم که چند جمله‌ای بنویسم که بد قولی نکرده باشم. سوال به این شکل بود:

  • Pellegrinis erster Fall

    Marco Pellegrinis erster Fall, Ein Espresso für den Commissario, liegt mir ganz besonders am Herzen. Ich gewann das Buch in einer Verlosung, die der Autor, Dino Minardi, im März veranstaltet hatte. Doch bevor das Buch bei mir ankommen konnte, brach Covid-19 über uns herein, Lebensumstände änderten sich drastisch, zumindest meine, und so habe ich es erst 5 Monate nach dem Gewinn in meine Hände bekommen und lesen können. Am Anfang der Quarantäne war ja alles noch gut, aber als die Zeit vorantrieb, begann ich meine Bücher immer mehr zu vermissen. Kein großes Problem, aber der Lesealltag, symbolisch für alles Andere stehend, war durchbrochen und im Zentrum war dieses Buch, auf das ich mich sehr gefreut hatte.

    On translation and exegesis in the Zoroastrian religious tradition

    Zoroastrianism, now a minority faith in Iran and India, is an Iranian religion with a complex textual transmission reaching back to the remote antiquity.

    The oldest layers of the surviving Zoroastrian texts are in Avestan language and commonly dated to the middle of the second millennium BCE. Exact dates and circumstances of composition, however, remain uncertain, so that little is known about the socio-political context from which these texts emerged. After two millennia of oral transmission, the texts were finally committed to writing, at a time when the language must have no longer been in active use.

    Das Wasser am Hals: Zwanzig Sätze über die Trägheit, eine Erzählung von Paul Bartsch, sticht nicht durch Geschichte und Handlung hervor, sondern durch Erzählstil und Aufbau. In dieser Hinsicht erinnert mich die Erzählung an die Romane, die man in der Schulzeit liest, um mit der Kunst der „großen“ Autoren vertraut zu werden.

  • قورباغه

    امروز گربه سیاه همسایه رو دیدم که با دقت زیاد دورخیز کرد، روی دیوار پرید و در لابه‌لای برگها و حصار چوبی گم شد. من ظرف میشستم. چند دقیقه بیشتر نگذشته بود که از همون سوراخ نامرئی گذشت و دوباره در حیاط ما پیدا شد، با چیزی، تکه نانی شاید، در دهانش. رفتم پنجره دیگر که ببینم چه چیزی در دهان دارد که قورباغه بخت برگشته چشمانش را به من دوخت. چه التماسی. سالها بود که دیگر قورباغه‌ای در حیاط خودمان ندیده بودیم. سراسیمه در را به قصد عملیات نجات باز کردم که شاید گربه از ترس قورباغه را زمین بگزارد. ولی دیگر دیر شده بود. روی دیوار چوبی بود و بعد سقف انباری، یک پرش دیگر و دوباره ناپدید شد. من ماندم و شرمندگی.

    Wir wissen nicht, wie Robert Walsers (1878–1956) literarische Nachleben oder sein Nachlass ohne Carl Seelig (1894–1962) ausgesehen hätte, sicher ist aber, dass Seelig in der Überlieferung von Walsers Schriften eine zentrale Rolle gespielt hat, und damit wesentlich zu seiner Position und Rezeption in der heutigen Literaturlandschaft beigetragen hat.

    Berlin, Göteborg, Einstein und ein Junge mit einem netten Esel!

    Im Sommer 1923 findet in Göteborg eine Jubiläumsausstellung statt. Albert Einstein soll dort während der Ausstellung seine Nobelpreisrede halten, ohne die er sein Preisgeld nicht bekommen würde. Geplagt von dem aufsteigenden Antisemitismus in Deutschland der Weimarer Republik macht er sich gerne auf die Reise. Doch auch ein Antisemit und verbissener Widersacher Einsteins reist nach Göteborg. Einstein erscheint nicht wie geplant in Göteborg und kann seine Rede nicht rechtzeitig halten.
